Within ACL 5 Low, the person is more able to pass heavy items like pots and heavy bowls. Opening new or difficult containers, adjusting methods of cutting (slice, chop, mince), mixing (stiff dough) becomes easier when the person can control their pressure effectively. They are less likely to over fill bowls. They can attend to all striking features (color, shape, size, number of items – up to four, and linear information) as they work, and can follow a written recipe in a rigid manner, asking for verification of meaning of directions.

Within ACL 5 Low, the person is better equipped to complete laundry tasks on their own. They are more able to effectively use and vary range of motion and strength to solve new problems in laundry activities with assistance to avoid harmful and undesirable effects. The person may set and follow a weekly schedule for doing laundry but has trouble adhering to it. They are able to learn a new sequence of actions (e.g. how to use a new washing machine or laundry product) demonstrated several steps at a time.

Within ACL 5, the person tries different techniques in order to achieve a better result. When short-term memory is intact yet long-term memory is lacking, secondary consequences maybe neglected. Many appliances have warning signs that warn of dangers due to secondary consequences or unseen forces such as electricity to cover their liabilities.

Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are done often, but not every day. Within ACL 5 Low, it is easier for the person to learn new techniques and adjust to changes.

Within ACL 5 Low, they are able to use neuromuscular action which uses feedback from what they are doing to adjust their posture. They start to make finer incremental movements to improve on the quality of their actions. This allows them to walk effectively on different terrains and reduces the frequency of falls from tripping on uneven surfaces.

Hair & Nail Care

Within ACL 5 Low, the person is able to complete their hair and nail care with standby supervision to identify potentially harmful effects of actions. They may need reminders to keep appointments.

Within ACL 5.0, the person will need cueing to attend to unseen surface properties (under nails).

Oral Hygiene

The person is able to vary the use of equipment to discover better methods for maintaining oral hygiene. If the person needs to use new equipment, provide a demonstration within ACL 5 Low.

Eating and talking at the same time enters the scale in ACL 5.2. They may seek variety in diet. They may understand explanations of food groups and dietary restrictions but choose to not alter their diet. Socially acceptable table manners are noticed but they may choose not to alter their behavior.

With a special diet, caregivers will need to monitor food / alcohol intake, encourage compliance, and notify doctor if noncompliance may be dangerous.

Within ACL 5 Low, the person is able to wipe more effectively. They can also adjust clothing more smoothly. They may still require reminders to avoid errors such as reminders to go ahead of time before an outing to somewhere without easy access to restrooms.

Within ACL 5 Low, they may learn to use extended bath aids to clean back and feet, with standby / minimum assistance to remember safety precautions, attend to unseen surface / spatial properties (e.g., dirt between toes, area on back), and assisting with bathing areas that require persistence with tedious adjustments (depending on level of physical disability). They may fail to anticipate secondary effects or intangible properties of new products (e.g., allergies to soaps, using lotions that are incompatible with elastic pressure garments).
