The person's attention to neuromuscular adjustments may assist them with shifting their posture to walk on gravel, wet or dry sand, up and down steep grades. Tool use may extend to using a cane, guard rail, or rope in difficult terrains. In the neighborhood, their routes are limited to well-known locations because they require to see somewhere before they can form a mental image of where they need to go. New locations are learnt by following someone they trust. Some people with long term cognitive disabilities use a skill best described as survival independence.

When the person is left alone, access to a telephone is important. Land lines in some geographical areas are connected with emergency services with the address of the caller posted on each service's screen. Dialing 911 or 000 will bring help if the person can reach the phone.

Portable alarm buttons and smart watches that people can wear to notify services if the person is unconscious or have a fall are more affordable. Alert buttons are less expensive.

Use real and recent observations of the person's ability to manage their finances. Below are a few commonly observed behaviors and suggestions on how to address the issues.

Provide the person the opportunity to do routine daily / weekly shopping with assistance to consider intangible properties and secondary effects in order to prevent complications. Also, provide an opportunity for the person to manage routine weekly and monthly income and expenses with assistance to solve new problems, avoid harmful effects, and plan for future financial security.

If there are a few tablets being taken at regular intervals, a pill box may be used to help with compliance. Notify doctor if noncompliance may be dangerous. The person is likely to ignore abstract concepts such as medication side effects. Secondary consequences from poor compliance to medication taking may also be ignored.
