Tool use may extend to using a cane, guard rail, or rope in difficult terrains. In the neighborhood, their routes are limited to well-known locations because they require to see somewhere before they can form a mental image of where they need to go. New locations are learnt by following someone they trust. Some people with long term cognitive disabilities use a skill best described as survival independence. This is where they learn not by following a demonstration but by numerous errors. There is of course risks involved with using this method of learning.
