Their recognition of their need for a residence and someone else to provide food and clothing fades away. Wandering off and getting lost with unknown whereabouts or living on the streets may be prevented by locking the doors. Their understanding of time is not much longer than an hour and their sense of independence is limited to that timeframe.

Their access to past memories of who they were in the past seems to be related to the content that is capturing their attention now. When surprising comments about the past are made, an association with a perceivable cue can usually be confirmed by the person. When asked to describe their past, their narratives name significant contents but are usually silent or vague about salient details such as how well, what was the best and worst part, how often, under what circumstances, or who else was there.

The synthesis of equivalent classification, linear, movement and sensory information results in the person having a sense of completing a goal. The sense of purpose helps them make sense of their actions. This sense of purpose is limited to what they can directly see or perceive with their other senses.

Various simple activities are used to see if the person is able to classify or group actions into goal-directed activities.

To Verify

Can the person identify a goal-directed activity? Is there a beginning, middle and end steps for doing activities? Is there a purpose to what they are doing?

When presented with the stitching activity, and asked, "Please make three stitches" the person stops at three stitches. The striking feature of a set of numbers makes sense to them.

Within ACL 4 Low, attention is paid to doing an activity with striking properties. Their behaviors are to conform with a sample to do an activity and to name the activity. They usually will do any activity that they can do and be glad to have something to complete in around 45 minutes. However, their time to completion is usually twice as long as normal.

Affirmative activities are activities which keeps the person happily occupied. Below are a few suggestions.

Grasp & Release

There are many mini basketball games on the market which encourages people to use their grasp and release skills. You can also quickly make up your own activity by using a tennis size ball and a waste paper bin.

Limited awareness of the physical environment makes them vulnerable to fears for their survival. Self-protective reactions are apt to turn supplies into weapons and that needs to be avoided.

In ACL 3 High, they have a much better ability to use their hands. Targeting of feared objects like caregivers may occur. Reduce the person's fears and anxiety by providing calming activities.

They can write their name without understanding informed consent.

Leaving an unlocked residence and getting lost is a risk that is often prevented by locking the doors.

With nothing to do, they tend to wander around and out of the building. We need to collect data to see if a schedule of activities prevents wandering off and getting lost or other "escaping" attempts.

Programs are less labor intensive when people are scheduled together in small groups. A supply cart on wheels can be rolled any place in or outside; the end of the hallway or the lobby are often available. The point is to get them out of their bedrooms, and let friends, visitors, administrators see what they can still do.
