Walking and other movement information still attracts the person's attention. The person will enjoy walking freely and following a path. Make sure that there are sturdy chairs for them to sit on to have a rest and that the path is protected from harsh weather.

There are many activities in daily life that use a backward and forward motion. Take for instance brushing their teeth, washing their body or face. Let the person complete some of their self-care tasks as part of their affirmative activities. Let them take pride in being able to play a part in caring for themselves. Of course the caregiver will need to make sure the task is completed to a satisfactory standard.

Affirmative activities like being able to move their hands backwards and forwards to create an affect is what is enjoyed by someone functioning at ACL 3.2. Their sustained attention may be short. Be prepared to swap to another activity of let them have a rest before repeating an activity.

The directions that the person functioning within ACL 3.2 is able to understand have a characteristic pattern of showing them the object, demonstrating the motion and the effect, and handing the object to the person, who imitates the demonstration.

Since the linear organizing effects of the back and forth motion is new to us, the general public is apt to think we have lost our marbles. "Seeing is believing." Watching them engaged in the activities described as patterns of performance can be done in person or on videotapes.

In residential facilities there is an ongoing conflict between the self-care that these people can do and the time that nursing attendants have to take care of a caseload. The problem was intensified when self-care was the only thing that we knew about that they could still do. The paradigm shift from behavior to information increases the scope of what they can still do during the rest of the day.

Within ACL 3.2, the person might not even pay any attention to the effects their actions are having on the surfaces of furniture and tables. Ordinary household dust is a surface property that is noticed within ACL 5.2. All they may notice is the motion in a small spot. Dusting appeals to many women who will happily "dust" in one spot for 5 to 30 minutes. As their attention fades away, the back and forth motions are shortened, rounded, slower, less frequent and gradually discontinued.
