The ability to change their pace is often a job requirement for employment positions that do not seem to require attention to abstract information.

While doing activities, a sense of time is compared to the speed of one's actions. The speed of motor actions provides internal cues. The effects of their actions are external and must be perceivable.

Role Classifications

The universal need to classify people into we / they groups is evident. The classifications tend to reflect local norms based on cultural, ethnic and racial stereotypes. Social conventions to be politically correct are often disregarded or followed inflexibly.

Their possessions are recognized and differentiated from others.

Words and vocabulary that seem to connect possessions with monetary value usually lack sufficient comprehension for equitable business transactions.

Writing monthly checks or paying monthly bills may be dependable as long as nothing out of the ordinary happens.

Periodic maintenance of possessions is apt to be neglected or done inadequately. The need for long-range financial planning and property insurance is either a habit or incomprehensible.

People with a history of self-sufficiency before the onset of a cognitive disability rarely change their sense of independence. The probable reason is that the information needed to change a sense of independence is too abstract to capture their attention and learn.

People with a cognitive disability are usually dependent on others for their financial support because very few of them can hold a job. When badly needed help is refused, the situation is incredibly frustrating for the people who are often overextending themselves to provide the assistance.

Making concrete improvements makes sense to the person in ACL 5 Low.

The person has a sense of I am learning how to improve what I am doing. They are able to store information in their short-term memory spontaneously from their working memory. They can store an image for about 30 to 45 seconds and thus do not need to refer to the sample per action.

Having opportunities to learn to improve on what they can tangibly see helps them achieve a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Motor control adds eye-hand coordination in small spaces, bilateral hand coordination, learning new uses of their hands and tools to change material objects, and carrying / moving objects (such as wheelchairs) around safely. The person is now able to store mental images in their short-term memory which can last up to about 30 to 45 seconds. Their actions cause effects that are guided by mental cause and effect connections.

People may spontaneously follow a routine for looking at a picture album before going to sleep at night. Within ACL 4, they rarely watch TV and they need something to do to settle down.

Individual albums to look at in the evening may reduce troublesome behavior associated with that time of day because their personal identity is protected by looking at the pictures. Someone to ask questions about their memories may add to their reassurance as they describe them. Telling the same story every day is reassuring for many people. Turn the television off when it is merely a distraction.
