Sense of Independence

By Anonymous (not verified), 5 March, 2025

People with a history of self-sufficiency before the onset of a cognitive disability rarely change their sense of independence. The probable reason is that the information needed to change a sense of independence is too abstract to capture their attention and learn.

People with a cognitive disability are usually dependent on others for their financial support because very few of them can hold a job. When badly needed help is refused, the situation is incredibly frustrating for the people who are often overextending themselves to provide the assistance.

If they have an independent income, savings, or pension, their inability to understand the abstract concepts in money management makes them easy targets for scams. When other people try to provide financial support or protection from scammers, they often encounter a lack of understanding that assistance is needed.

They are apt to stay in a residence, unless they are locked up. When they are in locked facilities, escape often becomes their top priority, and if they can, they do.
