People with a history of self-sufficiency before the onset of a cognitive disability rarely change their sense of independence. The probable reason is that the information needed to change a sense of independence is too abstract to capture their attention and learn.

People with a cognitive disability are usually dependent on others for their financial support because very few of them can hold a job. When badly needed help is refused, the situation is incredibly frustrating for the people who are often overextending themselves to provide the assistance.
