The person's attention is captured by a visual pattern that is made into an image and retained in working memory. After their attention is captured, their performance is organized by the image.

The effects of their actions are compared and evaluated with the image of the pattern. The corresponding behavior looks smooth, fluid and continuous because their attention stays focused on causing the effects contained in the image of a visual pattern.

Supportive and realistic benevolent care for the cognitively disabled so they can thrive in their place in society is something worth striving for. The trouble they cause in society has not been solved by trying to shut them up and a more constructive approach is needed. By demonstrating what they can do, one case at a time, public education takes place in its most credible form.

The first reaction of other people to persistent negative behaviors is to restrict or eliminate the supplies they used and contain the person. The person is to blame for any negative consequences. Their lack of insight and inability to learn from errors can be quite disruptive, and it does test anyone's patience. The maximum use of this approach is to be locked-up in an isolated room for weeks, which is currently used in US jails. The core attitude that willpower and blaming develop is mean and adversarial when taken to the extreme.

With a new onset of ACL 5.0, family and friends are apt to be confused about what to expect from the person. Their behavior seems to be within normal limits, but it is punctuated by surprising deficiencies.

An objective explanation of reduced ability to pay attention to qualities of information is appreciated by people who are able to comprehend abstract information at the time that you talk to them. Be aware of the fact that emotional stress can temporarily reduce their ability to process abstract information.

When the person tells narrative stories, their facial expressions and intonations are within normal limits. They are rarely aware of the time constraints of the listener and do not perceive the need to shorten the length of their story telling. Many people like to talk about themselves for hours. When conducting an interview or a conversation to obtain needed information, they often have to be interrupted.

With a cognitive disability, communication is always a problem because the impairment cannot be seen. In addition, the mental impairment is a lack of attention and no one knows what they are not paying attention to. Self- reports are not reliable, but the person does know something and still has rights. Using what they can do tends to get tangled up into knots because different people define the problem from different perspectives. The following suggestions may help avoid the knots and concentrate on activities they can do.

Learning

Learning by overt trial and error can be demonstrated by gradual improvements in the perceivable effects in visual patterns. Within ACL 5.0, the improved effects are limited to the visual patterns that capture their attention.

To use information again, it must be stored in long-term memory. Selected information has an emotional component, which supports the idea that learning may be supported by positive experiences.

When visual patterns and supplies are available, their attention can be held to a low normal range of 30 to 60 minutes.

Their attention is sustained by doing one thing at a time, and most people cannot talk and do something with their hands at the same time. They are easily distracted and are apt to shift into talking and stay there.

Their response time seems to be a little slower than normal, but data is needed.

The problem is often an inability to inhibit a response.
