Separating a person's ability to make an informed choice and the right to exercise their free will gets rather tricky within ACL 5.4. As secondary consequences are not recognized where does the person's rights start and the general community's responsibility end. This complex situation requires the skills of a functional profiler. The ACDMweb.com is dedicated to providing the support required to meet such a complex challenge.

Caring for someone functioning in ACL 5.4 can be a challenge as many facilities do not provide access to the equipment and supplies that the person will want to make use of.

Changing staff attitudes from only addressing activities of daily living to one that includes considering their quality of life requires compassion and our commitment to achieving a greater good for all.

As secondary effects and abstract concepts such as other people's feelings are not considered, family and friends often see the person as being self-centered.

Focusing on positive traits of the person such as what they can do to help build a positive attitude is difficult but beneficial for everyone. Showing them a positive result when practical is effective.

With some medication taking a few weeks to a few months to take effect, medication compliance may require supervision.

The person functioning in ACL 5.4 uses verbal communication by tracking a singular theme in a story. They understand verbal explanations to consider spatial properties when carrying out their activities. They scan written directions but rely on the visual cues from a sample to solve a simple problem. A demonstration is required to solve a complex problem.

Seeing is believing is as good phrase to summarize how a person communicates in ACL 5.4. They have to see the results in order to believe it. A demonstration for steps of a new and unfamiliar activity works best for the person rather than verbal or written instructions.

Learning

The process of evaluating forms new cause and effect connections that can be remembered and used again, when applied to similar materials.

The person will also compare the dynamic process and the final product with their prior experiences with assembly of similar objects and judge the results. Personal choice will inform the person of their wish to stop or continue, and additional factors may or may not influence their decision.

The person's attention is captured by spatial fits and held by adjusting the relationships between parts of whole objects. Putting things together is in the same category as taking things apart and rotating objects in space while causing effects, such as cutting the shape of an oak leaf out of paper.

The quality of concrete information that captures attention is limited to the perceivable properties of the 3rd dimension. The person needs to see for themselves. The inside of boxes and drawers may need to be opened for them.

Attention span may be within normal limits of 60 to 90 minutes when the concrete materials are fitting together as expected.

Frustration tolerance when things are not fitting may be short. The person is apt to quit within minutes of the encounter. Distracting them with a different, simple activity often helps them regain their composure. The person should not return to the frustrating activity until their heart rate has returned to normal. If frustration mounts again, the activity is too difficult for the person and both should be re-evaluated.

Attention is captured by the person's ability to store information in their short-term memory. In ACL 5.4, there is even more details than ACL 5.2. The person notices spatial fit. Spatial fit is the ability to notice fine spaces and if an object will fit into a certain space. Spatial fit allows a person to carry a large object without bumping into something else or the ability to maneuver a wheelchair or motor vehicle accurately. Spatial fit also affects a person's ability to dress themselves appropriately. They can pay attention to when clothes are too tight or are poorly fitting.
