Being able to sustain their ability to continue matching until the design is complete is the scoring criterion. They will keep referring to the sample until each piece is placed and the design is complete.

Reading with verbal directions does not supply enough information and must be supplemented with a demonstration that can be imitated.

The person can read the instructions but cannot form a mental image of what they need to do on their own.

The person can follow a demonstration of cutting a triangle piece using the template, pealing the paper backing on the Heat n' Bond and ironing pieces into place.

They are likely able to go ahead with making the windmill pattern after asking for verification for each step.

The mental effort to form an image of the sample and compare it their picture is usually sustained long enough to complete this design.

The consistent seconds between looking at the sample indicates that the image was not stored in long-term memory. In addition, no improvement in the speed that the person applies to colouring in the triangles is expected during the colouring session.

They refer to the sample for each tile placement.

Spacing is inconsistent.

When using Design D, they may mix up the green, purple or blue colours. The picture above shows one possibility of mixing the colours up.

This is a surface appearance error.

Rote learning is a memorisation technique. Repetition is a substitute for understanding the reasoning and relationships in the information. The exception to this general rule is the formation of an image which was discovered while watching people copy a design.

The diamond colouring in the ACLS-6 provides an opportunity to observe a person during the process of forming an image within ACL 4.8. There is tedious checking of the sample and colouring a section and checking and colouring and checking and colouring.
