The person's sense of space is formed by synthesising sensorimotor information, physical actions, and elements of the physical environment that enter their visual field. Direction seems to emphasise linear information. To separate a sense of direction from a sense of space, direction includes the senses formed while walking or using public transportation.

Familiar landmarks may be used to find their way to a new location. Reading and verbal comprehension are required to use signs, maps or follow instructions from a GPS.
