Classification with a cognitive disability is the organization of material objects into groups that are the same, and the organization of actions into steps that serve the purpose of completing an activity. Within ACL 3.6, classification takes the simplest form of grouping objects together according to sensory information provided by concrete, material objects.

Within ACL 3.6, classification cues are added to the scale. The expected task performance includes the beginning of classification around the concept of a shape.

Sustained attention for everything is about 1 minute, including remembering verbal directions and maintaining their attention on what they are doing. Recuing and repeating directions can be necessary about once a minute. The same action may be done several times within that minute.

With recuing, sessions can be scheduled for 30 to 45 minutes. On site supervision will be required the whole time.

Response time can be measured as follows.

  • Press start after you complete a demonstrated direction.
  • Wait and then press stop after they complete the action you demonstrated.

The usual response time is between 5 and 10 seconds.

A demonstration within ACL 3.6 requires attention to an action of using one object to produce an effect on another object. The imitations of cause and effect are simple and perceivable, with obvious connections such as using a crayon to color on a piece of paper that has a drawing of a shape. The person is able to:

The same objects that would be placed in a row in the middle of a note card within ACL 3.4 will be placed along the edge or perimeter within ACL 3.6. Their attention has expanded to include the surface they are placing the objects on, and that surface has outlines that are shapes.

Coloring in ACL 3 is like music in ACL 2. The beat of the music and the shapes to be colored must be rooted in the human DNA to mesmerize people the way that they do.

Coloring a simple picture usually displays evidence of tracing the lines of a shape and staying within the line. When doing the copying, clover, and flower pot activities, the shapes are placed across the top and down the side but we know that the left to right sequence is influenced by the sequence for reading and writing.

To Verify

Sorting can provide an estimate of sustained attention time and there are a number of objects that can be sorted safely. To verify, sorting must be done by shape. Color sorting verifies ACL 3.6.

Classification information enters the scale in the transformation of a line into a shape. The transformation is obvious when they trace the outline of a shape with their complete attention on tracing. The person has a limited attention span, which lasts for around 60 seconds. Constant prompting is required for them to finish the task.

They can imitate a sequence of bilateral, active upper extremity range of motion (UE ROM) exercises. For the UE ROM, reciprocal pulleys will probably require constant cuing and hand-over-hand assistance or grip assistance aids.

Lower extremity range of motion at the hip may be done while seated, one leg at a time.

The tactile cues used for seated activities in ACL 2.2 may be done with fewer rest periods within ACL 2.4 because their sitting balance is better. Hand-over-hand assistance may sustain attention longer after they have had an opportunity to walk.

Being able to walk unrestricted is what the person enjoys best. Provide the person a safe flat space for them to wander around in. Provide a number of sturdy chairs they can plonk into when they are tired.

Drinks and food are required as they will require a lot of energy to fuel their constant movement. Having a path to follow also helps sustain the person's attention. When they are happily occupied following a path protected from harsh unpleasant weather they may not trying to escape especially if the entrance and exit point are disguised.
