Awareness of the perimeters of shapes may be shown by staying within the lines, and / or outlining shapes, which are the scoring criteria.

To confirm the score, you can check on their ability to sort objects by bold colors.

Partial completion of the picture is common, with them scribbling along the lines.

The color may be applied anywhere on the paper. They may not be looking at the effects of their actions nor paying attention to the lines on the picture.

The form of grasp will be whatever habit they have stored in their procedural memory.

Select the behavior that most closely matches your observations:

Introduce the activity by saying:

Place the blank picture at 2 feet (60 cm) in front of them.

If they do not look at it, prompt by tapping the picture.

If you are unsure about their attention, hand them a coloring tool and continue to observe.

If they are not sure what to do with the coloring tool, provide a small demonstration by starting to color part of the picture.

Ending the Activity

The person decides when to end the activity.

They will either stop moving or say they are done.

The use of a line is used to organize a person's actions and enters the scale in ACL 2.6, when they can mentally draw a line from where they are to where they want to walk to a destination. Critical observations include how much attention do they pay to the lines in the drawing. Do they color within the lines? Do empty spaces prompt and keep them going until all spaces are colored in and they are done?

The following materials are required:

• A pack of crayons.
• A blank sample for them to color in.

The simple coloring activity can be used to differentiate between ACL 3.0 to 3.8.

There are two samples to choose from, large and small. Use the small version for ACL 3.8.

The scoring criteria are the same for both versions.

The ability to store an image in their short-term memory results in the person making a picture without the need to refer to the sample each time they place a piece. They can place the pieces in the same pattern as the sample.

You will need to confirm ACL 5 Low with another activity, such as Design C from the copying activity or the Kite activity. Your observations of the person's pattern of performance doing ADLs and IADLs will also help to either confirm or rule out ACL 5 Low.
