Making a Sample
The aim is to get a clear and well defined edge of patterns while avoiding errors such as smudged paint, blobs and seepages of paint under the edge of the stencil. Practice on a piece of paper before stencilling on the card:
- Secure the stencil with masking tape.
- Remove most of the paint by blotting on the practice paper until a dry brush effect is achieved.
- Tap the stencil brush with an up and down, in a vertical motion.
Overt trial and error begins with discovering how to hold the brush, how to move the brush across the space and how much paint can and cannot be on the brush. You will need to make your own discoveries.
While you are learning, observe the mistakes you make in smearing, dripping, and seepage under the stencil. Pay attention to your ability to anticipate and avoid problems.
Once you can control the amount of paint and seepage, experiment with shading by placing one colour on top of another and brushing the paint to create a three dimensional effect.
