Sticking to rules and directives without considering the overall intent of the instruction is common when someone cannot use abstract concepts. Explaining the overall intent may have limited compliance whereas telling them a new directive has been set will have a more effective result.
The aversion to taking acceptable risks is also common when a person is functioning within ACL 5.8. Instructions that do not address when risks are or are not acceptable causes confusion. The person may lack the ability to judge when the instructions are followed and when exceptions are acceptable and appropriate when they are considering abstract concepts. Oppositional behaviour may develop when others try to correct these errors. If the person does not understand why something needs to occur due to abstract considerations, assist them with managing the risk rather than convincing them as this will frustrate them and make them oppositional.
