Hand-over-hand assistance is provided by placing an object in the person's hand, firmly grasping their hand and the object and guiding the arm movement, i.e. you do 70% to 90% of the work. Range of motion, trunk stability and sustained attention are the benefits. Washing, wiping, painting, and rubbing are familiar movements with obvious effects. Hand-over-hand techniques do not need to be limited to feeding and grooming and their attention may be sustained longer, and with more effort on their part, doing something else with the metronome.
Supplies that you can put in their hand include lotion, creams, soap, and finger paints.
Rubbing can be used to create a surprise picture:
- Fold a piece of paper in half and dot some paint on one half of the inside.
- Close the paper and rub the outside, hand-over-hand.
- Open the paper and show then the picture.
- Non-toxic paints in bright colours can be used.
Hand-over-hand motions for washing can be started within ACL 1.6. Some amusement from the silly frogs may be enjoyed. Personal touches can be added by their favourite soaps and lotions. If their personal history is unknown, pleasant smells can be appreciated.
