Fall risks are increased by the fact that people functioning within ACL 4 rarely put things away and clutter accumulates around them. Their balance may not be steady enough for them to carry items around or up and down stairs.
Without anything to carry, they may still trip over stairs, curbs, and uneven surfaces. Restricting access to steep, narrow, or circular stairs may be necessary. Someone should anchor down electrical cords, tape down curled or frayed rugs, restrict access to wet or highly polished floors, install non-skid tape, remove clutter from stairs, clothing from banisters and hand rails, and repair deteriorating steps. The safest thing to do is to watch them manoeuvre around places that they intend to go.
