Hair & Nail Care
Prevent ingrown or broken nails by cutting and smoothing nails. Remind to wash hair in the shower and make arrangements for haircuts. Remind to brush hair at routine times of the day. When brushing their hair, they are not apt to attempt to comb the back or sides of their hair.
Oral Hygiene
The person is apt to follow a familiar habit for brushing their teeth, but flossing may be difficult if the floss gets stuck. They may need assistance to pull the floss out. Flossing unseen teeth is unlikely until ACL 5.0.
If they have taken care of their dentures prior to onset, habits may be followed when the supplies are in plain sight. With new dentures, rote learning may require months of drilling and the ACL 5.2 surface properties will still not capture their attention. Doing it for them is cost-effective.
Grooming
When grooming, the person needs access to a mirror with good lighting to see the front of their head. They may need assistance with new hairstyles, procedures, or tools.
Heavy make-up that is easily seen may be preferred and blending is rarely understood.
Supervised use of products and tools that may cause damage such as straight razors (may cut self), nail clippers, or chemicals (hair and nail products), mascara and eye make-up is needed.
