The original surface appearance is made into an image to start a repeated process of comparing and evaluating cause and effect connections. Their actions are adjusted to cause different effects; multiple cause and effect connections may be observed during a progression. Each connection may be compared and evaluated with images retained for a few minutes in working memory. The final evaluation is a judgment made about the whole progression, which may be stored in long-term memory.

Surface appearances are the contents of the images. The person pays attention to a huge number of variations in color, size, shape, and texture as long as they are flat. Boxes are treated as if they are a series of flat surfaces.

Comparing Images

During the process of comparing successive cause and effect connections, the person is using several images of recent, past appearances. Retaining several images of surface appearances is necessary to:

  • Evaluate overall improvements in the effects of their actions.
  • Assemble two dimensional pieces to form a unit (wall hanging) by following a diagram or a sample.
  • Examine surface appearances to find and remove contaminants.
