Their attention to the physical environment is not matched by an assessment of their own behavior in the broader social and financial context. Other people will probably identify problems that they are not aware of and that a functional profiler must investigate.

Time

Their attention to the day and the approximate calendar date is within normal limits for a person who is not working. They are apt to consult a calendar or a digital clock to verify the date and time.

Space

Scanning the environment opens access to all of the objects in plain sight or inside of cupboards and drawers. When outside, they can look around and notice traffic, traffic lights, other moving objects and people.

In a work area, they can get objects needed when seen in plain sight or when stored in a customary location.

They are able to rotate an object in space to make working on it easier.

Scanning

Activities that benefit from their ability to scan include:

  • Outings to art galleries, museums, zoos and other sightseeing activities.
  • Outings in the community to restaurants, shopping, the movies.
  • They may be able to find the bathroom when signs use the international male / female symbols. Words on signs will probably be ignored.

Sense of Self

Most people cannot understand what they are not paying attention to. Objectively, they have a higher than normal rate of error, but that data does not seem to be collected or make sense to them. The idea that they have a cognitive disability rarely makes any sense to them.

They may be able to begin making effective, brief adjustments in non-dominant hand use.

They actively use past experience to try to improve present performance, but may be ineffective, out of context, or potentially hazardous. When potential hazards are pointed out, they are seldom understood.

Other People

Most people accept a heterogeneous social group if that is a part of their social background. As long as they are treated fairly, they can usually accept being in a lower rank with a mental illness or in groups with people of different social ranks.

Social Rank

The rank of authorities is perceived and usually respected. The teacher or supervisor has the rank to give permission to personalize / modify a project so that it is different from the sample.

They tend to ask permission to personalize / modify the sample. When an error is made, they may correct the mistake by changing location, pressure or tension, or by requesting assistance. Within ACL 4.0 through 4.4, people tend to stop when they see an error. Within ACL 4.6, they try to fix it with the methods that are available to them. The social rank of a teacher is someone who can instruct them in the correction of errors, which is usually respected.

Material Objects

These people usually can match two striking features at a time and overlap material objects.

Samples & Errors

When a person is functioning within ACL 4.6, you can demonstrate three or four familiar steps at a time and they will probably remember them all.

To judge what they are apt to remember, watch their reactions to your instructions. If the steps make sense to them by the virtue of being similar to their prior experiences, they are more apt to be retained. If they look like they are trying to memorize the sequence or a step, it probably is unfamiliar and will be forgotten. They usually need help with the unfamiliar step.
