Linear Information

Within ACL 3.4, linear cues are used to place objects in a horizontal row. A vertical row is formed by stacking objects on top of one another. Linear cues are also used to fold fabrics and paper.

Placing objects in a row is the most obvious use of the beginning of linear information. When European languages are the person's cultural custom, the row goes from left to right and usually contains three to six objects. The row is apt to start out straight and sag down at the end.

We have noticed that other cultural writing traditions influence the left to right progression and have observed bottom right to the top and right to left.

The row is usually placed in the middle of the space, i.e. the middle of the note card of placemat and unrelated to a sample of a design within ACL 3.4

The limited number seems to be determined by a limited amount of mental energy; they say they are tired. With the elderly, the separation between physical and mental energy is difficult, but the young in good physical condition display the same pattern of performance.

Try to find objects that fit into the palm of their hand, because they are easier to grasp and most apt to be placed. Pinch, with the thumb and two fingers, will probably be effective with most people, unless their fingers are numb.

A row is a line that is formed spontaneously within ACL 3.4. The three rows shown here are possible but rare because people functioning within this profile rarely have enough mental energy to sustain attention that long. Rows are rarely straight and usually sag at the end, when mental energy diminishes. I would not recommend the pencil erasers and included them in this picture as a precaution. They are too small and look too much like candy. My guess is they would be a choking hazard.

With soap bubbles, a supply of wands of different sizes and shapes may be an appreciated novelty in the speed and direction of the line, beginning within ACL 3.4.

Large, colored paper clips have multiple uses beginning with ACL 3.4, by placing them in a row. Their rows are seldom tidy and usually contain 5 to 7 objects.

At last, linear information that does not look like it belongs in nursery school. All of the dog bones can be placed in a row.

The size of the dog bones fits into the palm of their hand, there is no top or bottom to confuse their orientation and swallowing is not a problem, unless they bite down really hard. Biting hard is unlikely, but do not turn your back because nothing is impossible.

Demonstrate placing marshmallows in a row and redirect their attention when one goes into their mouth. Gaining their attention with marshmallows gives you a good chance of capturing their attention with other activities. The best time of day for most people is in the morning.
