While they are walking, the quickest screen is to ask them where they are going. If you do not get an answer, a sense of direction moves people in a straight line. Within ACL 2.6, many people walk beside the wall in hallways or around the perimeter of larger rooms.
If they are unable to weight bear, they may be able to push and pull with the dowel stick used with upper extremity range of motion exercises.
To Verify
To distinguish between ACL 2.4 and 2.6, you simply need to ask them where they are going. If you do not speak their language, they can usually respond to gestures for the behaviors of sleeping, eating and washing their hands or needing to go to the bathroom.
The sense of direction does not require verification that they are going in the right direction for their stated location. Within ACL 2.6, we give them credit for a sense of knowing where they are going and being able to say so.
To Rule Out
The difference between ACL 2.6 and 2.8 is the grasping of objects for around 20 seconds. They usually don't have the problem with grasping an object without being able to release it on command that people functioning within ACL 2.8 have.
