Attention may be captured by placing soft, furry, cuddly textures in their hands. Look for small stuffed animals and dolls without eyes or other small attachments that can be pulled off. The international labels on toys as being "unsuitable for children under the age of three" are a well-recognized need for concern. Explaining that the same problem occurs with a cognitive disability helps family members understand the need to be careful.

A source of ready-made stuffed toys are the toys made for dogs. If people can get past the initial shock of the idea, there are a lot of adorable toys that are very safe and inexpensive. The squeakers may be annoying, but there are a few that make a crinkly sound that is less intrusive. Within ACL 1 and 2 they may not find the squeakers; look for ones that are hard to find. As a shopper who looks for no squeakers, I can tell you that they are hard to find.
