Non-Weight-Bearing Adherence
The person may have a better ability to inhibit their actions which is required for non-weightbearing compliance. Non-weight bearing boots may still be used to remind them to not weight bear if adherence to non-weight bearing protocol is crucial.
Their learning of a transfer sequence is much quicker and easier within ACL 5 High. They may understand and follow verbal and written instructions without the need of a demonstration. Reminders are required less to follow safety procedures like locking brakes.
They may follow instructions and usually try to follow it invariantly (e.g. avoiding falls caused by hypertension by always getting up slowly) with standby for minimum assistance to ensure safety.
Ambulatory with Support Required
Aids like walking sticks, quad sticks and crutches maybe used with some training. The person is more able to vary their gait. The secondary result of not using the aid may be understood and adhered to such as the increased risk of falls or the results of not following weight restrictions post-surgery.
They will notice the changes in terrain, slipperiness of the floor and will take steps to prevent a fall, within ACL 5.6. Being able predict and prevent negative secondary consequences of spatial fit enters the scale in ACL 5.8. They may place crutches and other walking aids carefully so they are not a trip hazard.
Transfers
Unless they have severe physical disabilities, a gait belt is generally not required as they are more able to adjust their weight.
Reminders are often required to lock their brakes until the person is within ACL 5.8 when transferring on / off wheelchairs.
Wheelchair Use
The person will scan and look around their immediate environment to avoid hitting objects. Within ACL 5.6, the person is better able to push and pull the rims with varied amounts of force. They may be able to steering in tight turns. The person is able to judge the terrain and avoid negative results from wheeling through wet or dirty environments.
Within ACL 5.8, the person remembers to lock their brakes during transfer and on slopes.
The person will have a finer ability to control a power wheelchair even in restricted spaces within ACL 5.8.
