Comprehending secondary consequences enters the scale in ACL 5 High. This ability occurs as information is now easily retrieved from long-term memory. The person is able to avoid mishaps which are normally expected. They remember past mishaps and have learnt to avoid these. They understand that action A results in consequence B which also results in consequence C. Their focus is no longer focused on consequence B. The ability to comprehend secondary consequences is what differentiates between ACL 5 Low and ACL 5 High. In ACL 5 High, they can anticipate negative consequences. The pointing out of negative consequences by other people is not seen as being unfair or bullying tactics used to raise their fear but is rather heeded and understood.

To Verify

Can the person understand secondary consequences? When the person can easily access long-term memories, secondary consequences makes sense.

When presented with the lacing activity, and asked to copy the single cordovan stitches without a demonstration, they can figure out how to make three stitches. In ACL 5.6, a hint such as "how else can the lace go through the loop" is required. In ACL 5.8, the person has enough directionality to be able to figure out how to complete three single cordovan stitches independently. They understand secondary consequences of spatial fit in ACL 5.8.

In the copying activity, the person is able to make Design D quickly with spacing. They may do the first row and column to judge the spacing which makes completing this task quicker and easier. Being able to store the image in their long-term memory results in reduced referral to the sample. A specific amount of reference to the sample is not provided as there will be individual differences. This activity has a ceiling of ACL 5.4.

When presented with the kite design, they refer to the sample less as they are able to hold a mental picture of the image in their long-term memory. They do not need to refer to the sample after each piece is placed. This activity has a ceiling of ACL 5.4.

In the ironing activity, the person can replicate the design without referring to the sample very often. They understand secondary consequences of surface appearance in ACL 5.6. Bubbles left in the vinyl material are avoided by carefully smoothing out the vinyl over the fused fabric. The person will carefully place pressure on the vinyl material and bonding material to achieve a smooth finish. In ACL 5.8, secondary consequences of spatial fit are understood. The triangles and the discs are carefully aligned before using the iron to fuse the material. The written warning to not place the iron directly on the vinyl and bonding material is also heeded.

In the stenciling activity, the ability to understand the secondary consequences results in the person taking precautionary steps like wiping their hands (ACL 5.6) and taping the stencil down to avoid movements (ACL 5.8). Other precautions are the taping of adjacent spaces while stenciling different colors on adjacent shapes. The person may also practice on scrap paper rather than risk ruining the valued card stock.

To Rule Out

When functioning in ACL 5 High, the person does not pay attention to abstract intangible information or concepts. They lack the ability to understand these non-concrete concepts. Some intangible concepts are heat, electricity, other people's feeling, long-term finances, medication effects and time.

Without the ability to use these abstract concepts, the person is very concrete and may seem indifferent to other people's feelings, their finances, or preventing harm due to these abstract concepts like electric shocks.
