Within ACL 4 Low, many people can state the amounts for a few highly important and large amounts, e.g. monthly disability check, rent. Those amounts are often the only amounts that they can tell anyone. They may not know the prices of most of the goods and services that they receive. In these circumstances, caregivers usually must assist with managing finances and provide a daily allowance. Assistance is usually required to manage on-going, long-term, and unusual monetary transactions.
Within ACL 4.4, the person might be able to rote learn following a budget when the procedures and verification is supervised by someone who cares about their sense of dignity. The caregiver will probably have to demonstrate all procedures for managing money until well-learned (check writing, depositing money, reading statements, etc.) and is followed rigidly. They may learn to follow a routine for using an automated teller to make deposits or get cash.
A custodian will need to provide assistance to adjust to changes in income, expense, or usual banking procedures; to prepare for infrequent major expenses; and to manage emergencies such as stolen money or credit cards.
Caregivers should consider checking daily for money-related problems if the person lives independently.
