Hair & Nail Care
Prevent ingrown or broken nails by cutting and smoothing nails.
Assist with washing hair in the shower and make arrangements for haircuts. Remind to brush hair at routine times of the day.
Oral Hygiene
Provide objects at appropriate times of the day. Direct to sequence actions, if necessary. Cue to brush unseen surfaces. Clean dentures for them to ensure complete cleanliness/prevent infection. Floss teeth for them, if they agree and can tolerate it.
Grooming
Good lighting and a mirror are necessary for grooming. A portable speech mirror can be used at bedside if the lighting is decent.
Avoid shaving with razor blades and using eye make-up because their eye-hand coordination is clumsy and unsafe.
The caregiver will need to lay out the supplies and direct the sequence of actions.
Point out the need to change the location of what they are doing for brushing the sides and back of their head or changing the finger while filing their nails.
Judging the correct amounts of a product is a frequent problem that can be assisted by selecting the amounts of hair products, lotion, and make-up for them.
They may be able to use an eyebrow pencil to follow shape of eyebrow and lipstick or lip balm to follow the shape of their lips. Their use of an emery board or a nail file usually follows the shape of their fingernail.
Adapt blush handles as needed.
Encourage socially acceptable results and gently correct socially unacceptable results. Their attraction to bright colors can produce some garish appearances that can be prevented by pre-selecting available shades of make-up.
