Introduce the activity by saying:

Place the blank picture at 2 feet (60 cm) in front of them.

If they do not look at it, prompt by tapping the picture.

If you are unsure about their attention, hand them a colouring tool and continue to observe.

If they are not sure what to do with the colouring tool, provide a small demonstration by starting to colour part of the picture.

Ending the Activity

The person decides when to end the activity.

The use of a line is used to organise a person's actions and enters the scale in ACL 2.6, when they can mentally draw a line from where they are to where they want to walk to a destination. Critical observations include how much attention do they pay to the lines in the drawing. Do they colour within the lines? Do empty spaces prompt and keep them going until all spaces are coloured in and they are done?

The following materials are required:

• A pack of crayons.
• A blank sample for them to colour in.

The simple colouring activity can be used to differentiate between ACL 3.0 to 3.8.

There are two samples to choose from, large and small. Use the small version for ACL 3.8.

The scoring criteria are the same for both versions.

The ability to store an image in their short-term memory results in the person making a picture without the need to refer to the sample each time they place a piece. They can place the pieces in the same pattern as the sample.

You will need to confirm ACL 5 Low with another activity, such as Design C from the copying activity or the Kite activity. Your observations of the person's pattern of performance doing ADLs and IADLs will also help to either confirm or rule out ACL 5 Low.

The ability to store an image in their working memory results in the person making a picture with the yellow rhomboids tucked under the blue corners. They will need to refer to the sample each time they place a piece. They can place the pieces in the same pattern as the sample.

The tentative score is ACL 4 High.

The ability to grasp the concept that they are making a picture results in the green hearts being placed together in the middle. The inability to hold an image in their working memory results in the person being unable to tuck the yellow rhomboids under the blue corner pieces. The yellow rhomboids are fully visible and are placed on their side or perpendicular to the corner pieces.

Score

The tentative score is ACL 4 Low

The person's attention is on putting down each piece as opposed to making a picture of a clover. Pieces are usually placed along one border or all pieces are used. The shapes are often placed in an upright position and the person may request more pierces to fill all spaces. The pieces are poorly organised and does not resemble the picture.
