Within ACL 4.4, the person pays attention to two striking features at a time. This results in a quicker and more accurate matching to a sample to complete a simple concept of an activity as both the horizontal and vertical linear information are used together. The other striking features which are used two at a time are colour, shape, size, number of items (up to four) and lines.

Children's toys have some gross eye-hand coordination items that people might enjoy between ACL 3.6 and 4.2.

When a visual design is added to manipulatives, it usually raises the ACL score because in ACL 3 attention is not captured by the shape or pattern.

The person is able to use the vertical and horizontal axis simultaneously resulting in more accurate placement of objects.

The house, flower and tractor pictures below are available for printing. Blank card stocks are available from local craft stores. Folding office paper into four equal pieces can also provide a base for gluing the pictures.

Pegboards are really just another form of mosaics because the same patterns can be used. I have done a series of colouring pictures using the same designs.

The advantage of pegboards is that they can be reused forever, so they are a good, long-term investment.

The Giant Pegboard and pegs are big enough to escape being a swallowing risk. The 25-hole pegboard is thick and sturdy and should work beginning in ACL 3.6 to 4.2.

Mineral mosaics are a more sophisticated form of mosaics that might appeal to some people. The designs from the ACLS-6 and other variations can be used. Craft projects and materials between ACL 4.0 to 4.4 are hard to find. Mosaics are an old standby.

To copy a beaded necklace design, the person can match the sequence of colours when it is laid out in a line on a linear plane. This beaded necklace design is probably too hard for most people functioning within ACL 4.2. It can be simplified by making all of the flowers one colour. The sample you give the person depends on what you are trying to do. Do you want to evaluate for a higher ability to function or provide an affirmative activity to keep them happily occupied?

Posters for the seasons and holidays can be made if someone will draw a big, traditional shape, such as a 6 foot (1.8 m) Christmas tree on a huge piece of white paper. Give people access to pieces of green tissue paper. They can crinkle the paper and stick it on with rubber cement during the first session. During the next session they can stick on the ornaments, which are different colours of tissue paper.

It will take some planning ahead for them to have access to the top and bottom of the poster. Try stapling the folded top to a dowel that can be raised or lowered.

The concept of trash enters the scale in ACL 4.4. Within ACL 4.2, someone else may need to provide cues to clean up. Without direction, the trash is often left where it is. When living alone, the tendency to not remove the trash often becomes a health hazard.

Sensory information may be used to capture a person's attention if they are anxious. Pleasant and calming sensory information may be used by the person to modulate their anxiety.

Memories are based on a person's well learnt past activity history. Their memory of a task is revolved around one striking feature. This makes their memory of how things are done rigid and not negotiable.
