The primary effect of improving the quality of surface appearance increases while the person is doing a project. The opportunity to improve requires a repetition of the same cause and effect connection enough times for a progression to occur. An action that is done once or twice might be connected to learning, but the person and the observer did not have an opportunity to evaluate improvement.

Within ACL 5.2, the person is able to complete three single cordovan stitches after two demonstrations. The retention of the new, third dimension information is slow.

We initially thought the copying activity did not have a good differential between ACL 5.0 and 5.2 until we realised we had introduced surface appearance in the colour of the tiles. The original recessed tile box had hand sanding and staining the wood as the distinguishing factor between the two modes, but boxes are not practical. Use the sketching or peanut butter activity instead to differentiate between the modes.

Improvement is observed in the quality of the effects produced, but the same action must be repeated enough to times to provide the opportunity to display improvement. The primary effect happens first and immediately. The effect is perceivable on the surface appearances that captures the person's attention.

The person may be able to coordinate the movements for bending over, trunk or torso rotations and upper and lower extremity exercises.

Their interest in diagonal lines generalises to crossing the midline of their body when doing exercises.

Their balance is usually dependable on stairs when railings are available.

The changes in causing effects that the person makes while using tools tend to be extensions or rotations of the movements of their arm, e.g. pounding nails with a hammer, turning screws with a screwdriver, stirring with a long spoon.

Most people do not have a history of painting or drawing designs. They appreciate pre-drawn designs such as colouring pages, paint by numbers, embroidery designs stamped on fabrics, iron-on designs or designs that can be traced. The internet makes finding designs faster and free, but family and friends tend to select designs that are too hard or simple. Skilled knowledge is usually required to find and select designs that capture and sustain attention for the desired amount of time.

Too Hard

Wet floors are a fall hazard that can be graded according to the materials used in the floor construction, drains, and bath mats.

Within ACL 5.0, the person rarely pays attention to a wet floor until cued to do so. Rote learning to use grab bars, wipe the floor with a towel, or move slowly is apt to be ineffective or inconsistent without supervision. The realistic goal is long-term, in sight supervision of independent showering.

The person's attention is captured by a visual pattern that is made into an image and retained in working memory. After their attention is captured, their performance is organised by the image.

The effects of their actions are compared and evaluated with the image of the pattern. The corresponding behaviour looks smooth, fluid and continuous because their attention stays focused on causing the effects contained in the image of a visual pattern.

Supportive and realistic benevolent care for the cognitively disabled so they can thrive in their place in society is something worth striving for. The trouble they cause in society has not been solved by trying to shut them up and a more constructive approach is needed. By demonstrating what they can do, one case at a time, public education takes place in its most credible form.
