The colour may be applied anywhere on the paper. They may not be looking at the effects of their actions nor paying attention to the lines on the picture.

Introduce the activity by saying:

"I would like to see if you can colour this picture."

Place the blank picture at 2 feet (60 cm) in front of them.

If they do not look at it, prompt by tapping the picture.

If you are unsure about their attention, hand them a colouring tool and continue to observe.

If they are not sure what to do with the colouring tool, provide a small demonstration by starting to colour part of the picture.

The use of a line is used to organise a person's actions and enters the scale in ACL 2.6, when they can mentally draw a line from where they are to where they want to walk to a destination. Critical observations include how much attention do they pay to the lines in the drawing. Do they colour within the lines? Do empty spaces prompt and keep them going until all spaces are coloured in and they are done?

The simple colouring activity can be used to differentiate between ACL 3.0 to 3.8.

There are two samples to choose from, large and small. Use the small version for ACL 3.8.

The scoring criteria are the same for both versions.

The ability to store an image in their short-term memory results in the person making a picture without the need to refer to the sample each time they place a piece. They can place the pieces in the same pattern as the sample.

You will need to confirm ACL 5 Low with another activity, such as Design C from the copying activity or the Kite activity. Your observations of the person's pattern of performance doing ADLs and IADLs will also help to either confirm or rule out ACL 5 Low.
